David G. Lanoue

David G. Lanoue (born David Gerard Lanoue, September 27, 1954, Omaha Nebraska, U.S.A.), retired professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana, translator, critic, and poet. A specialist on he life and work of Kobayashi Issa, Lanoue has produced four books of translations, five haiku novels, three books of criticism, a manual for writing short-form poetry, and two collections of his own haikai. He maintains The Haiku of Kobayashi Issa website, for which he has translated 10,000 of Issa’s haiku, and wrote the Haikupedia article “Kobayashi Issa.” In 2002, with Johnette Downing, Lanoue cofounded the New Orleans Haiku Society, and he served as President of the Haiku Society of America (2013–2015). He has lived in Lexington, Kentucky, since 2024.
