Haiku International Association (HIA) Haiku Contest (Non-Japanese Section, 1999–  )

Background

The HIA Haiku Contest has been held annually since 1999, a project of the Haiku International Association (HIA) based in Tokyo. One or two original haiku may be submitted in either of two sections, Haiku in Japan or Haiku in Non-Japanese / Haiku in Overseas (i.e., work in English). Two judges are selected from among prominent members of the HIA; since 2020 contest adjudicators have beenToshio Kimura and David Burleigh. Each judge independently selects two Winners and four Honorable Mentions. Contest results are announced at a ceremony at the HIA offices and published in the association’s journal HI (Haiku International) and its website. Supporters of the contest over the years have included: The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, The Japan Times, The Association of Haiku Poets, The Modern Haiku Association, andThe Association of Japanese Classical Haiku.
