Modern Haiku 1.3 (Summer 1970) carried a notice and rules for a new, one-off competition, the P.F.C. Gerald Brady Memorial Haiku Contest. Poets were invited to submit one original, unpublished haiku on the subject “That which dies too soon.” Entries were to be typewritten, submitted in triplicate, and postmarked by August 15, 1970. The names of the three judges and the prizes were included in the announcement.
The one-off contest was the personal project sponsored and conducted by haiku poet Virginia Brady Young of Hamilton, New York, in honor of her brother who died in World War I. It should not be confused with the Haiku Society of America’s annual Gerald Brady Senryu Award, established in 1988.
