Dimitar Stefanov (Bulgarian Cyrillic: Димитър Стефанов, born March 20, 1932, Shumata, near Dryanovo, Bulgaria; died October 19, 2018, Sofia). A poet, writer, editor, and translator, Stefanov was known as “the doyen of Bulgarian haiku.” After studying Bulgarian philology at the Charles University in Prague, he worked as an editor for Radio Sofia and various newspapers and journals. Stefanov was author of more than 20 books of poems, sonnets, and essays, as well as more than 10 books for children. He was a founding member and chairman of the Bulgarian Haiku Club (later renamed Bulgarian Haiku Union). He was the first Bulgarian to publish his own book of haiku Гората на глухарчето (1988; The Forest of the Dandelion), and also edited the first Bulgarian haiku anthology, Дъждовни семена (2001; Rain Seeds). Resided in Sofia, Bulgaria.
